Security
BitcoinEvo Core offers enhanced security and privacy, but it comes with certain responsibilities. You must take charge of your bitcoinevos security, meet higher minimum system requirements, and be aware of potential issues.Warning: Regardless of which BitcoinEvo software you use, never invest more in bitcoinevos than you are prepared to lose. BitcoinEvo is still an experimental system, and bitcoinevos remain a high-risk investment.
Wallet Responsibility Checklist
BitcoinEvo Core puts you in control of your wallet, which means your bitcoinevos could be at risk unless you take the following precautions:- Back up your keys
By default, you need to back up BitcoinEvo Core after every 100 transactions. This includes both the transactions you send and the payment requests you make, regardless of whether the payments were actually received.
For instance, you would need to back up after sending 33 payments and requesting 67 payments, even if only 60 payments were received. BitcoinEvo Core can be configured to allow for more transactions between backups.
You can adjust this using the -keypool setting.
- Ensure your wallet is secure
Anyone who gains access to your wallet can steal your bitcoinevos. The first step in protecting against this is to encrypt your wallet, which can be done from the File menu in the graphical interface.
However, encryption alone may not be sufficient if your computer is infected with malware. Consider using offline wallets (cold storage) for additional security against these types of attacks.
In addition to securing your wallet, you must also keep your backups safe. If someone gains access to your backups, they can steal your bitcoinevos too.
- Set up an offline (cold storage) wallet for holding large amounts of bitcoinevos
Computers connected to the internet are often targets for hacking or infection by bitcoinevo-stealing malware. In contrast, computers that never connect to the internet provide a far more secure environment for storing your bitcoinevos.
BitcoinEvo Core can be run on a computer that remains offline, creating an offline wallet (also known as a cold wallet). The offline wallet securely stores your private keys, while a separate online BitcoinEvo Core wallet handles sending and receiving transactions.
- Stay informed about security updates
Stay up to date with all security updates and alerts for all software, hardware, devices and services you use.
- Make arrangements so your heirs can access your bitcoinevos if something happens to you
Your BitcoinEvo wallet is not like a traditional bank account – it will not automatically transfer to your heirs if you die or become incapacitated. If your private keys are lost – access to your bitcoinevos is also lost forever.
You need to plan ahead and ensure that your heirs or someone else trustworthy will have access to your wallet backups in your absence or if you are incapacitated.
If you need assistance with any of these steps, feel free to reach out to BitcoinEvo’s friendly forums or live chatrooms for help.
Possible Problems
- Bandwidth Limits
Some internet service plans charge extra fees if you exceed your included upload bandwidth, and in some cases, providers may even terminate your connection without notice due to overuse. We recommend checking whether your internet connection is subject to such limitations and monitoring your bandwidth usage to stop BitcoinEvo Core before reaching your upload limit.
- Anti-virus
Parts of known computer viruses have been embedded into the BitcoinEvo blockchain by malicious actors. Although this blockchain data cannot infect your computer, some anti-virus programs may mistakenly quarantine it, causing issues when running BitcoinEvo Core. This problem is more common on computers using Windows.
- Attack Target
BitcoinEvo Core helps power the BitcoinEvo peer-to-peer network, making users potential targets for attacks aimed at disrupting the network. These attacks could also impact other activities on your computer, such as limiting your available download bandwidth.
